We (TIER) have a new arrival, a reject from last night's sale, arab or at least arab-cross sabino mare.. Don't know anything about her so far, other than that she's painfully thin and obviously a bit snotty. But...she's safe and would LOVE some helpers, since she is an unexpected addition. Gail will let me know more later, but for now, here is a pic of her taken at the sale before being brought to TIER.

What gets a horse rejected?

Skinny, primarily. That's certainly not the only reason. The snots don't seem to have disqualified a horse if it was otherwise in good condition.

Too skinny to run through the ring to avoid public outcry or too thin to be wanted by a meat buyer? Which is the reason behind the rejection? Just curious. The local auction owner only rejects horses that are unsound or too thin for public sale; those he buys per pound and the public never sees them; they are feedlotted for a while and then sent directly across the border.

From what I can see of the picture, she doesn't look as skinny as Gigi was when I brought her home, so I wouldn't THINK it's the too skinny for public auction, unless Mike's has raised his standards somewhat. And THAT I would find pretty hard to believe. She's got a very pretty little face.

I hope you have the mare quarantined away from your other animals. The sale folks may know something about the source of the 'snots' that you don't. One cannot be too careful about biosecurity these days....for example we have just had a case of Equine Herpes reported here in Ontario.

yes, she's separated from the others. Gail is quite a pro at this. She sent me some new pics (got that halter off - it appears to have been on a LONG time).

I thought TIER was no more, there has not been a post on the TIER board in ages.
I had no idea Gail was still out there doing her rescue work.
Nothing can be as virulent as the Strangles that was at Leonards, I do not doubt for a second
Gail is a pro at quarantine!!!!

Looking forward to seeing more photos.
