What happened was that the Postal worker brought out a package ( they USUALLY just leave a card in the mail box by the road ) he had a small 2 wheel drive pick-up ( now I am NOT blaming HIM ) BUT he called a co-worker and she came out with her 4x4 truck as well as her teenage son with his 4x4 truck and tried to pull him out ( BTW it took 4 hours ) and they totally tore up my driveway and YARD !!! :( I am thinking of turning this in to the US Postal service for compensation for the damage, some of the ruts are at least a foot deep and now we have to park up the road and walk to the house because we can't even drive thru now ... would you sue them over this ???? ( BTW, my husband's boss owns Tow trucks, I offered for them to call and have him come out, they didn't want to pay ) and my hubby's boss recently had to pay out $2500 to someone who's yard they drove across and made tracks in their yard ( and NOT even CLOSE to the damage I have )

Another concern is that we just listed our farm for sale, THIS is for sure going to impact that :(

I would not do anything about suing until you ask for compensation first (which it sounds like is your plan) If they say no , sure I'd go after them to fix your hard to how it was before.

I don't remember any of us signing something saying 'if the mail truck tears up my yard after getting stuck and calling family rather than a pro' that you waive your rights to compensation for the damage lol...

Wow, I'd be MAD.

He should have called a pro, not family..bad move there.

Wow, I get so disgusted with people who don't stay on the gravel. I would blame the driver if he thought driving off the gravel was OK in this weather. Kathy

Yeah see ! They should have called a Professional NOT a teenager with a heavy foot, all the kid was doing was spinning out so much ( probably thought it was fun ) and made everything much worse :( I am bummed !!!

I AM going to ask for compensation first, but will contact my attorney to see how much I should ask for...

Heather T, and you have potential damages from the loss of the sale of the house...so factor that into your request, too.

USPS has insurance, and they can either pay some now, or more later.

I'd be totally cheesed. Totally.

I am very sorry. My yard looks the same after a hubby's friend parked his truck in my yard pulling a trailer with jeep on it. I came home from working a 12-hour shift night shift to find this. I was livid but polite. I was able to pull him out with my truck, however they had already caused so much damage. I then spent the next hour filling in ruts by myself( they had to get back on the road?)the best I could. It will need to have dirt brought in and leveled to look right.

I would first ask for compensation before suing. However, they do need to help resolve the issue. I had a meltdown with hubby and informed him friend will be helping out come spring time when we do some repair work around the place .That is the most compensation I will be able to get.

Good luck. A torn up yard does not help your house sell.

Having gone through this with the electric company, when they pulled a boom truck through my yard to fix a pole....

I wouldn't ask for compensation-I would ask that they FIX it! The guy who was hired to fix mine has been back twice. He did a very good job, but a flood came and washed it all out-as I suspected it would. We have a little creek that runs beside the house, basically separating half the property. Where they dragged the truck through is the only place to get a vehicle across to this side of the property. I refused to sign a "job finished" waiver because the crossing is steeper than before and still looks iffy as to whether it will "hold" or not. They did not give me a single argument. The contractor that fixed it spent (3) 12 hour days here, and 2 full days the second time. They re graveled my driveway, leveled and seeded the lawn, ect. He was shocked at the damage and took about a million pictures, as did I.

Just call your local PO-if they give you the run around, let them know you are calling a lawyer....

It's a VERY good thing you took photos! I'd ask for compensation or for them to pay to have your yard fixed and reseeded...

Oh what a yucky mess!!! Thats terrible, especially considering you are trying to sell your property. I would for sure call and tell them you want it fixed!!! I think you should speak to your lawyer first and see what he/she says, so that you have good information when you speak to the postal service about it. If they decline or seem iffy, you can inform them of the action you are prepared to take and that might so motivate them to do something about it!

Good luck Heather!!

WOW! I would be so livid due to the timing with the house up for sale. I agree, make them fix it not compensate you. They really messed up not calling a professional.
