I am looking at buying a mare, and wanted to know about doing research on her. What are strains, and what are families?? Is there an index of horses in a family or strain? What about substrains? I have been reading the posts, and am a little confused. Just wanted to know. Thank you.

Just put the 'new' mares picture and registered name with the correct spelling, and everyone here will help and tell you all you need to know. You won't have to learn how to do your own research for this girl anyway. Knowing and recognizing strains and families is a learned behaviour, I can tell you about the ones I like and use, and so and so can tell you about that other one ect. Put her up and see what happens. T

Hi Jenny,
According to Datasource, she is 21 years old and has never had a registered foal. Do you have breeding intentions with this mare? At her age and lack of experience, it might be an expensive and possibly unsuccessful proposition. There are many mares who foal into their twenties, but they are usually mares who had some foals in their teens.
From what I can see, she has one line to old Babson Egyptian on the top side, a bit of old Polish through the center, and about 75% Crabbet. She is very close up double Gaz'i, a stallion noted for producing excellent mares. Her price on Datasource is $1000.

Great pedigree, but I would check to see if she has had any unregistered foals. Even one would be a good thing. If you are looking for a riding horse, then she has the working type of pedigree to be a good one.

Jenni-
You've already had some good advice here and I second the comments made about trying to breed her for a first foal at her present age. If you want her as a broodmare that is an important consideration.
I like her two lines to Ga'Zi close up. He was a SCID carrier however. This MAY mean this mare is also a carrier and had foals die in babyhood from lack of an immune system (which might be why she has had no foals registered). I am not trying to alarm you but did want to point this out. Another important consideration when breeding is whether she is a carrier or not-there is a carrier test that can be done to ascertain her status.
Here is a link to my articles on how to read a pedigree to help you understand better about strains:

Best of luck to you.
