Trooper walked right into our trailer for the evacuation like he’s been doing it all his life. He was fascinated with all the things happening at the show grounds as well as the walks we took him on. The best part for me was when I gave him fresh water in one of the hanging feeders. His large bucket in the stall had some of his hay in it, no surprise, so I decided to fill his feeder hanging on the front stall wall with water. Sure enough he came over to drink as it was filling. I discovered he takes four to six sips, then he swallows. Once he had his fill the fun began. First he submerged his nostrils and blew bubbles. Twice for that, then he shoved his nose in until it hit bottom, then with a flip that would make an elephant trunk jealous, he shoved out a bunch of water which we barely dodged. Back in went the nose and he then with a rapid dolphin like forward and back motion he churned up the water. When he was done I topped off the tub and he put on another just as feisty but of shorter duration performance. When we came home and filled his large water bucket he did the ritual all over again. The next time I’m present for the show I’ll try to get a video. He didn’t like most of the strangers but there was a couple who saw through his ear laying tough guy look and scratched his rump. When ever they approached his stall he would lay his ears but turn around for easy access. He’s well named, a true Trooper for sure.

The ear laying is familial.  His sire did it, his brother does it and Troopers nephews all do from birth!!!!!

As for the water Trooper was BANNED from having a push/paddle automatic waterer as his favorite thing was to just hold the paddle down and watch the

water spill all over the corral and flood it.
