In the areas along the coast in California the winds gan really blow at this time of the year. Fires are raging in the area where we used to live. Most of the places in Napa, Sonoma, and Santa Rosa that are on fire are places we have been, driven through, or know well. It's heartbreaking to see the pictures and read the stories from the front lines. In less than 12 hours the fire in Santa Rosa went from start to over 25,000 acres buring hotels, resturants, K-Mart, McDonalds, Arby's, two mobile home parks, schools, a large Hilton resort among others, and several complete tracts of homes. In Napa complete wineries have been destroyed. This morning I awoke to find it's still growing and now Annadale state park is burning. I have traveled many trail miles there and feel a personal loss. There are several boarding places and many ranches in that area as well as in most of the fire locations. From the stories told it was moving so fast that people barely had time to escape leaving most animals behind to fend for themselves. I'm not looking forward to the probable upcoming reports. So far 13 people have lost their lives in the various fires with the toll expected to rise greatly and I'm sure the animal toll will be devastating. Prayers and condolences to all involved.
Here's some past Annadale pics:

I have relatives all over the areas under fire. Neither my brother nor I have been able to contact any of them.

Prayers for them. It's not a pretty scene there with not much relief in sight. The website for the San Francisco newspaper is trying to keep up with it. Phone lines are out and only about 50% of the cel towers are operational.

From what I can see that's right in the burn area. The school has been closed and is right near the Cardinal Newman high School which was totally destroyed.

An absolute horror what is going on in Northern California.  Our news here in Southern California barely mentions it as they find Harvey Weinstein more interesting.

As a fire victim/survivor, this brings back such awful memories.

The winds were so bad here on Monday, I had the Four horse trailer hooked up and our vehicles backed up to the house in case something started in my area.  That is for me to be able to quickly evacuate my personal pets.  The horse area is pretty safe and we are the ones responsible for defending it as the fire department will NOT protect Horse Barns.

Prayers to the victims of all the fires.

So very heartbreaking.

Once you leave an area you may not be allowed back in. It may be a week or two before you're granted access so how do the horses left behind get feed and water? This question weighs on me and I've tried to answer it in my personal evacuation plan. Everything depends on how much time you have and the risks you are willing to take. Here's part of an article of one person who can't leave because she can't return and nobody is allowed to come in to help evacuate the horses.

http://www.sfgate.co...ry-12268288.php

An embattled horse rescue center owner refused to leave her animals behind as another fire neared her Bangor, Calif. property, where she was carefully monitoring the flames and the safety of her 72 horses and 100 cattle, goats and dogs.
Monica Hardeman said Tuesday that with La Porte Road closed due to the fires, she was unable to get the animals out in time — and no one could reach the Equine Rescue Center to help move the animals.
"We're just kinda trapped at this point," Hardeman said in a phone interview from the center. "If people could get to us, they would, but we're in a situation where it's just not possible."
Trying to keep people informed of what's happening at the center, Hardeman posted a Facebook video updating everyone of what's happening as roads around the ranch remained closed Tuesday.
"I don't want to leave because I know [officers] won't let me back, so I'm not leaving," Hardeman said of the situation. "Unless somebody puts a gun to me or something I might leave, but ... right now, I go where they go and nobody could get up here yesterday [to move the horses], they wouldn't let people in. ...I'm not leaving."

Most of the trails I rode in Annadale and Shilo Parks are burnt over.  Some of Sugarloaf is burnt as well as the home of Charles Shultz, the creator of Peanuts.  We would drive by it on the way to Sugarloaf and enjoyed seeing the figures of the Peanuts gang in the yard.  It was totally destroyed along with some memorabilia but fortunately, everyone made it to safety.  Most of his work is in a museum in Santa Rosa.  They're doing a painstakingly slow house by house search for people lost.  A few people that didn't have time to get away survived by staying in a swimming pool.  Currently, there are over 150 people missing in Sonoma County alone.  A brother of a customer where I work lived in a very expensive home, There was a frantic knock on the door in the very early hours with the shouted warning to "GET OUT NOW!  IT'S-A MATTER OF LIFE OR DEATH!"  They barely made it out with only their night clothes they had on.  Returning a few days later all that was left was a large gun safe standing in the ruins of what was a multi-car garage.  After breaking into it they found everything that was paper is just ash - money, papers etc., guns with wood stocks were burned to ash, guns with plastic stocks were melted, and the gold bars were melted into slag and joined with the plastic.  All in all, this is something I hope we never get to experience in our lifetime.
