I absolutly enjoy the antics of a horse that keeps me on my toes.

As Trooper settled I to his new life I noticed him intently watching as a horse or two are released into the area around the house but I didn't notice that he has also observed where the breakfast feedings are stored. At last nights feeding he came to the back gate near the feed shed for the first time. This is where the rest of the herd knows I can be talked out of a hand full of grain, feed, or a horse cookie or two as I'm making up the feed buckets. I complied with his wishes and finished making both the dinner and tomorrow's breakfast buckets. As I handed out dinner I went through that gate, which has never been opened by a horse in over 2 years. I fed grain to all and hadn't secured Trooper yet. I left the pasture through the main gate which leads to the path between Aspen's and Mattie's corrals. It has a chain latch but I just closed it without latching. I almost made it to the end of the path when right behind me appeared Trooper. He had pushed the gate open and started to explore where no Trooper had gone before. I let him explore while I dished up pellets and he then followed me to his corral. OK, it's time he was incorporated into the "outsiders" anyway.
The plastic feed lockers, where we put the morning feeding, are outside the corrals and have been sitting there mostly unmolested until yesterday morning. Shar will stick her head through her corral bars and push hers around but yesterday it was dumped over and some of the feed had been eaten. Hmmm.... This is something new for Shar. I can be a little thick at times as the herd is released for the night and has access to all the corrals. Last night we latched the lid shut which has successfully kept Shar out but this morning it had been pulled up to the corral fence, dumped over, the bottom removed (it just sets in place), and all the feed for 2 horses was gone. I have a strong suspicion as to who the culprit is, and it's not Shar.
I called Pam about something this morning and heard this story. Pam feed breakfast and turned the herd out when they were finished eating. A short time later Trooper and Mattie wandered by the living room window. "Wait a minute! I didn't release anybody into the yard yet!" She checked the gates and found the back gate had been pushed open, then pushed almost closed, but not latched. I know it was latched last night and Pam didn't use it this morning. Once again a prime suspect emerges and it's name is Trooper. I love it but there will be a "security" upgrade.

OOOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPPPPS I forgot to tell you - he comes by his Houdini skills genetically.  His dam could open anything and seems to have passed this on to all her offspring.

If I put Largent into the round pen without securing the chain by the time I turned away from the gate she was OUT.

I love that he had Mattie accompany him.

He will be in your house sooner rather then later!

He's very good at breaking and exiting. LOL. Feed bins moved, and back gate chained. All should be good. All should be good. I will keep repeating it over and over. LOL

I am still laughing this morning that he took Mattie along with him.  I can only imagine the conversation he had with him.

This entire family of horses- are CLOWNS.  From the moment they are born.  Known for stealing the farriers tools out of his box as the mom is being worked on, taking a big drink of water and coming over and spitting it on you or on the horse next to them, and making everything a toy  (Including their own bell or splint boots when turned out).  Usually its only the boys that have been like that but I have Troopers Niece "Tabby" is a Tom Boy and a clown.  They will also test any and all fences by pushing against them- which comes from the Hanoverian side, she was always a fence tester.

They also want to be the "Mayor" of the ranch and have to know everything that is going on, as it is all their business.

I will never in my life forget walking down to the barn and as I walked passed Troopers mom- Largents- in and out saw her standing there WEARING THE  FIVE FOOT GATE ON HER NECK.  Holy cow. Here is this 2 year old giant Hanoverian who somehow got her kind of large head through the bars of the gate and then just lifted it off its hinges.  No one was around and I figured one or both of us were going to die in the process.  Well she just stood there like a statue and let me turn the gate sideways and take it off her head...........I aged about 20 years that morning.
