Just curious if anyone might be able to offer some insight on horses that develop bird spots on a horse that is already an adult.

This is a 6 yr old PB Arabian, and developed these bird spots in about a months time and was not ridden during this time- so nothing from a girth could have contributed to these markings.

Any ideas?  Anyone have bird spots develop on their horse after their are an adult?

I've had several horses pop out with them as adults. Sometimes they stay, sometimes they are gone the next year. There is some thought it is caused by a copper deficiency

Our stallion has bird catcher spots.  Some come and go but others are there all the time.   One of his daughters started developing them around age 3.

We have him entered int he Bird Catcher spot study that Etalon Diagnostics is doing.

I googled the test and was able to contact this company.  They were very interested in having my boy in the study and in fact said they would like more Arabians.  They are also working on a test for better detecting laminitis before it actually happens.  So, if a horse has the clinical symptoms but all the tests show the horse is normal in the test scores, this test would do a better job of evaluating the condition of the horse.  Anyhow, just had to share and so thank you BFF for posting this information!!!

You are welcome.

We get enough of  "what are those" from the judges that it's funny.  At Nationals in 2014 the judge really did not know what to think and asked my Amateur handler about them.

I think it is interesting that one of his daughters has them and am watching the two year old I own by him to see if she gets them.

The lady I spoke to said she was a Scientist but also a horse owner.  SUPER nice gal, very excited to see what comes of this.  She told me that they believe these spots are genetic but that's what they hope to prove through the study.  I need to try and find pics of his lineage which shouldn't be too hard since his sire is a multiple Ntl Champion.

Did they tell you ow long before you would get your report?

So I actually had a Full panel run on my horse.  He had not previously been tested for LFS and I wanted him to have all his clearances (Had been tested Negative for SCID and CA previously).  This company is AMAZING and for $99 they do a full Genetic panel along with Color and other things.  Some of their studies are in "discovery" still. So my horse was found to be dominant for "Primative Markings" they do not know what this fully means since its in discovery.   They called me with his test results and went over the things that were in discovery and she explained the color test- as I have had zero interest in color genetics in horses.  It took about 3 weeks to get my results.
