Doh! So I just spent all this time uploading photos and writing a thoughtful post, I tried to post it...and "not responding". Guess I'll try again...but it's not going to be as thoughtful as the original!!! lol.

I live just North of Detroit and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the city, the old buildings, the people, their plight. These pictures were taken from the Ford Packard plant, which was abandoned 55 years ago. They started filming the new Transformers movie there today, and some of this will be destroyed in the process.

Some of these pics are taken for their artistic value...others just to document various things.

Ought-oh...I've seen what happens to people in movies when they hang their shoes like this... ;)

These used to be the offices in the plant.

Wish I could have seen this in its glory days, it is such a large, expansive structure.

Rule no.1 of urban exploration: Look up...and down. This ceiling is suspended by wire.

A room with an open ceiling.

There are few remaining windows...the broken ones are almost completely gone.

Fallen ceiling, watch your head!

Some more of the buildings.

Neat perspective.

Another corridor.
[attachment=73856:IMG_7043.JPG]
Two cars pulled over on the main road, four people a piece unloaded from the vehicles, not even bothering to close thier doors. Broad daylight, plenty of traffic. We are parked just beyond the sidewalk, hidden by that tree. It took them about a minute to break into our cars as I watched. Good thing I left my doors unlocked, no smashed windows for me. Forget filing a police report!
[attachment=73857:IMG_6814.JPG]
The broken glass photographs beautifully.

Another building view.

Will post more tomorrow if people here are interested in this sort of thing!

The pictures are really nice! You have a nice eye for architectural photography Krissy. Even being from Michigan, Detroit is not a city I feel comfortable in, I've walked through every neighborhood in New York without fear for 30 years (most of the time) but Detroit scares the crap out of me driving through. Kudos to you for loving your city and looking for the beauty within. Post more!

Thanks you two! I just love the city. I had a friend who lived in one of the run-down historical districts. The house was just incredible--four floors, not including the basement. Amazing mahogany fireplace, beams, etc. A fireplace in every bedroom. Wow! What a treasure. I still take a detour to drive past, even though he doesn't live there any longer. I will post more tonight, and I'll be going on a night shoot tomorrow! :) It seems like there is a lot to explore, but less to shoot because the buildings are like skeletons...all pretty similar and lacking personality. I wanted to take my camera to the tech fest, but went to a horseshow instead. Now that is an interesting crowd...

I work at Wayne State ... have for 33+ years. I used to feel a bit safer walking near off-campus than I do now. I even lived down here for a couple of years - near the campus historical district. I know people down in Corktown - yes the old places are way cool. Part of what you learn here is to keep aware of your surroundings. Then again, I was pretty much prepared as I grew up in Chicago.

GREAT PHOTOS!

Yes, you do have to be so cautious. There are so many desparate people in the city of Detroit. I go to these places with an ex-Detroit cop. He knows the city well, and keeps us out of the crossfire.

The place I'd love to take photos is the old train station!
