Last year our excellent young saddle mare, Starlets Prescription (AQHA), was accidentally bred by our two year old Appaloosa colt, Colidascope, just a few days before he was due to be gelded. Star is a great ranch mare and we certainly had no intention of breeding her at this point in her life, but due to a faulty gate latch, Fate had other plans! She and her dam were both in with their young boyfriend only about an hour before they were discovered in flagrante, and both received shots of lutalyse. However, over the winter, Star kept getting larger and larger in the rear cinch area and by spring it was apparent that the lutalyse had not worked on her.
All's well that ends well, however, and now she is the proud momma of a handsome colt! He was born ten days ahead of his due date and his dam did not wax or drip milk previous to his birth. Just goes to show that you can never trust a maiden mare!
The pics show him as darker than he actually is so I am pretty sure he is buckskin. But even if he is simply a light bay, he sure does have a nice blanket!
Momma and son are doing just fine, and the colt's grandma, who is helping to watch over him, seems to be quite proud of her newest family member!
Here are some pics.

Cute little guy!

Thank you!
His dam and granddam are both wonderful cow horses and we hope he will follow in their hoofprints :)
Even though he was unplanned, he is welcome!

His obsessive human mom has pulled tiny mane hairs to send off to test for the cream gene. I can't bear to wait until he sheds his foal coat to see what color he really is!!

Star, at this point it looks like he has momma's not-so-perfect ears but I will know better in a few days when he finishes "unfolding" and plumps out!
This is "dad" as a two year old just prior to being gelded:

Update pics of "Colidas Final Scrip" (maybe)..."Fin" is showing his true color, which is BAY with very black legs. He's pretty halterbroke now and is extremely curious.

Here he is with mom (notice the JRT in the background trying vainly to excavate a gopher):
Fin Star and Jill.jpg

Here he is examining the gopher hole that my JRT excavated:

Here he is, trying to nap but being checked out by SA Firefoxx, purebred Arabian gelding buddy:

And here he is pestering his mom:

I just love that classic blanket! Too bad he isn't half Arabian....
