We have a shetland pony & she has started licking the metal of the bar above her feed bucket, any idea why she would do this & how I can stop it? She's not chewing anything but she will stand there & lick the bar, my first thought was maybe it's the iron & she needs a supplement but I'm at a loss since this is the first horse I've had ever do this. Thank you for any input

odd...LOL...sounds kinda funny...makes me think of a kid sticking their tongue to a frosty flag pole...I don't have a clue why she would do that. Like you said might make sure she has a good free-choice mineral available. Hopefully someone else has so ideas.
God Bless,
Kay

My pony mare does this as well, wish I could tell you why, maybe it's a pony thing?

Thanks Leon, nice to know there are others doing it as well lol. Kay, have you ever seen the movie A Christmas Story? If so, remember the scene where the boy gets his tongue stuck to the flagpole & the fire dept has to be called? I think of that everytime this girl licks

Most likely she is in need of some extra minerals...get her a mineral block....they also will sometimes dig and lick into the dirt when they are in need of extra minerals....

Cajun does that (my barrel horse) he also sucks on his bit too. He just likes to lick the metal and he has all the supplements and minerals that are feedable. Try to get those mineral and salt wheels for guienea pigs and put in her feed bucket.

nope, she doesn't do it at any other time then in between getting her grain & going to her hay & it's not constant, just sometimes.

My mare does the same thing, but only after I give her a cookie. It is as if she needs salt after she has had sweets. I have the same problem. LOL!
